human beings funny creatures

You know the age old saying. How true it is.

Due to volume of work, workload pressures, and more recently changes to circumstances, I've been clocking in long hours.

Today I had a chance to finish work earlier, well, on time actually and I did nothing much all evening.

Finally got to the IKEA Sale tonight - disappointed, because the things I wanted to buy are not on sale. However, all is not a loss as managed to make some decisions on my furniture to be purchased. Hopefully will put in my order, get them picked for me and delivered.

Case in point on my indecisiveness. Oh decisions decisions.

Wednesday for me is a rubbish night for telly. It's one of those nights that there is hardly anything that strike my fancy. I could've carry out quite a few chores but I didn't. I was just lazy and tired.

In the end I watched a Singaporean DVD I bought during my trip back to Malaysia earlier in the year - Ah Boys to Men.

Personally, I thought my youngest sister must've been joking when she recommended that I watch this movie. I wasn't particularly impressed with the first 10 mins. I'm glad I persisted. In the end I'm now trying to find a way to watch the second part.

So how does the title relates to my rants so far?

Well, true to form at some point tonight  the following crossed my mind, "if only I was working" and "Wednesday is definitely a good night to be working late".

*smacks head*

I'm definitely a workaholic glutton for punishment and hard to satisfy.

Better go to bed as the battle continues tomorrow.

emotional roller coaster

It has been some emotional roller coaster for the past few weeks.

Yesterday all I could think of is my super down go to song.

However, as they say, everyday is a new day; and today it was a day of mixed emotions - nervous, excited, up, down, happy, annoyed, all in the same day. It is almost as bad as the British weather.

15th November 2012, will be a very memorable day in my life.

For now, I need a rest.

monday.random.blues

I am having one of those days.

Those my-instinct-is-telling-me-something-is-not-good-feeling day.

Perhaps I am tired.

Lack of sleep last night and the early drive down this morning.

Perhaps it is Monday.

***

I have been thinking about being honest.

I am wondering how many people really care if you are honest?

Sometimes I do wonder how much honesty does people really care?

Often times I have to remind myself to "shutup".

*sigh*

I could share rant on more but will reserve my breath for now.

***

A slight preview of what I am going to make tomorrow night. *smiles*

For now I want to relieve our holiday in Majorca.

the.proper.birthday.post

Right. Yesterday’s post was rubbish, if I say so myself.

It was unfair to just plonk in a post just for the sake of it when my brain was a mush from doing cost plans all day.

Anyways, my 30th birthday was better than envisaged, which IMHO is always good. Life's little bonuses, I would like to think of it as.

My birthday started with the arrival of cards and abundance of wishes on Facebook. My two Aberdonian men gave me pop up cards which I love to bits.

My BFF Ryan made an appearance by travelling over to visit me plus treating me to dinner at Sarti the night before.

For my birthday, I baked some banana split cupcakes inspired by Cupcake Project, after doing a test batch. My earlier desire to have black forest cupcakes, which is one of my favourite cakes and thus become the birthday cake of tradition if it is not blueberry cake, turned out to be disappointing during the test batch and I also quickly realise that not everyone like cherries. I still have to try baking it again one of these days.

My colleagues at work sprung a surprise and presented me with a chocolate tray bake with candle, birthday banners, two birthday songs, and a birthday card. Oh and how can I forget about the balloons!

My close friend Chuah and his mate Chee Meng provided excellent company to Japanese food at Nanakusa on Sauchiehall Street.

Then I went home to a lovely bottle of cherry beer.

Although I had greater plans months ago about a potential picnic, a dinner night out at the swanky Living Room on St. Vincent Street, and even a World Cup themed BBQ at one point, didn't turn out as plan; my birthday yesterday was one of the better ones I had for a long time.

I wished that TheOtherHalf was around to celebrate it with me (hopefully in the near future when we are not living apart) and my friends. And somehow I felt a bit nostalgic thinking about my family and missing them - my grandparents, parents plus stepmom, my sisters, my half brother and my wee niece; you may even say that I had a wee bit of homesickness (not something that happens often).

Still, I am thankful for the abundance of well wishes and love showered to me. It reminds me of how blessed I am.

random.airport.rants

They changed the pick up / drop off Point in Glasgow International Airport!

Ever since the terrorist who tried to bomb Glasgow airport incident in 2007, the initial pick up / drop off point was then changed to beyond Car Park 2 building, opposite the terminal. You'll need to walk through the car park to get to the terminal. It wasn't too bad considering you are most likely walking in a straight line to the terminal. Unless you are official airport taxi, you won't be able to stop right at the front of the terminal, right near the entrance.

Then BAA, who managed the airport, changed the drop off point closer to the terminal and within Car Park 2. It was of course much better, even though you need to get out of the car park within 10 mins or you risk to pay a very expensive parking fee for pick up / drop off. The trick was to get out, go around the building and come back in again.

When I was last here at the end of May, there was rumours that the pick up / drop off point was going to change but nobody knew where it would be.

This morning, I was dropped off at the far end of the terminal, just as the start of the terminal. I guess it must've been so hush hush that work is still being done around the area. Now, my only gripe is that it seems so far away a walk to take. Especially if you are walking towards Terminal 2.

Okie, it is not such a big deal, at least you don't have to worry about your times are up.

On a separate note, it was about 5.10am when I first arrived at the airport this morning and you see loads of people coming out of the arrival hall looking as if they were just back from their sunny holidays. I had quick glance and it looked like flights from Alicante. My goodness, I wonder what time they were up and depart from their departure airport.

Still, I'm sure they had a lovely holiday.

And to close, I had a seriously close call this morning with check in. Although I had only hand luggage, I forgotten that I can't check in the usual way using the check in kiosk and the BA check in desk queue was snaking away.

Of all morning! And check in was closing at about 20-30 mins time!

Luckily, a lovely lady from BA came along to speak to a family before me, got them checked in but they still need to go down the queue because they had luggage to check in, and then the lovely BA Lady came to speak to me and got me check in and my boarding pass printed.

That was a seriously close one this morning...

OMG. Can you believe it is almost three years since the airport incident on 30 June 2007???

duh

Took the train to work this morning.

When the train arrived at my destination I was waiting for the door to open.

Then only to realise that you need to push the (doors) 'open' button.

It's been a long time since I last took the train.

The last train I took was the Underground / DLR and the doors open automatically.

How silly.

Especially when there were other rush hour commuters standing behind you waiting to get out

day.out.to.yellowcraigs

Late evenings and late nights has prolly taken a toll on the body.

Down with cold last week. Luckily (almost) cured in time for our outing to Yellowcraigs on Saturday.

Glorious day for a picnic. My friend Chuah was generous in all ways and effort to prepare a wonderful spread for the picnic - nasi lemak, chicken rendang (so full of flavour and the burnt bits was the yummiest!), fried mee hoon, fried chicken, sausages, vegetable rolls, and the assortment of cakes. Too bad didn’t managed to take any pics of the food. Long story.

It was really windy. I don’t remember any time I had food with lots of sand. I’m sure some point in my life, sometime ago.

It was great walking about the beach, tossing the Frisbee and a torpedo thing with a whistle. My arms were aching the next day. Made TOH ran miles to pick up the Frisbee, interestingly it was mostly when I toss them. Ooopss...

The girls tried in vain to fly the kite. Somehow something wasn’t right.

How can a group of 14 not take any pics for the day? After numerous NG takes, this is the one that got loose.

We then head to Edinburgh for dinner - Chinese buffet steamboat. Not the best. I have my reasons.

Long day. We went home tanned and the few mat sallehs were burnt.

Ouch!

i.passed.i.passed.i.passed!!

I passed my driving test today! *beams*

*More beams*

Yes, you can imagine my joy.

Interestingly enough, besides the initially beaming, it just seemed... normal.

I’m not trying to be ungrateful, unemotional. I guess it is just me.

Meaning, it’s not much fun celebrating it alone, does it?

But, the amazing TOH will be taking us out for dinner to celebrate this weekend. And it is double celebration - me being a qualified driver and us, eighteen months together.

Back to my driving test...

Yes, I was nervous.

I had to remind myself not to think so much of the past, not to overanalyse all the things I should and should not do.

Heck, I have at least 10 years driving experience! But all this getting back to basics has really waver my confidence.

Luckily I did some driving when I was back in KL. In fact, a lot of driving. I’m not complaining, as it did make a significant difference.

I was really lucky today.

When I was going to work this morning, it was wet, grey and miserable. All I could think of is ‘I hope it will be dry and brighter’ and ‘no stress this morning’. I even had camomile tea for good measure!

Thankfully, by test time, it was dry, bright and I even caught some sunlight in my eyes.

Even luckier is that it snowed an hour after I reached home. Of which, if either rain or snow during my test would have meant I will need to reschedule my test!

Also, I had a really good examiner. He was kind, friendly and helpful. Put me at ease, especially the usual pressure you put on yourself to pass. He passed on good advice. Bless the man!

Bear in mind, I’m sure all of them are really nice.

Anyways...

I took longer than I should on the reverse parking. But I did it!

I received a minor point for speeding. Interestingly enough, my instructor always had to shout out for me to ‘ACCELERATE!’. When I realised to correct, it was a little too late. But I did it!

Whatever it was, I’m just so glad to have passed my exams!

One thing for sure, I won’t miss forking out lots of money to pay for my own lessons and tests. Where I learn it must have been not easy for mom to pay for the three of us to obtain our driving license in the past.

Thanks so much mom! xx

I know for sure I will miss my driving instructor, Jenny.

I remember the first time we met, she kinda barked at all my mistakes.

I suppose it was just me, not wanting to accept that I can be improved, that I’m that bad.

That evening and many evenings, I learnt a lot - not only about proper driving but also the many pointers that work the same for life too.

And as time passed by, Jenny did only what any nurturing teacher would do, wanting the best for their students.

And for that I’m always grateful. And her friendship as well.

So whilst I wait for the driving license to come through the post, I’ll just have to smile proudly and broadly at my Practical Driving Test Pass Certificate!

*beams!*

first.day.of.work.2009

I’ve been struggling since morning. *Yawn yawn*.

Thankfully, I managed to get up and be at work around 8am, half an hour earlier than usual. But I had been yawning since I get in and all I feel is just lethargy.

Now, a bit of headache.

Psychological? Maybe.

Laziness? Definitely!

I know I know... I should be thankful.

I did get to work in one piece and safely. No train delays for me compared to some.

And more importantly, I have a job to go to. The grim economy and job market news throughout the holidays haven’t been at all encouraging.

So yes, I should be thankful for everything.

There's even the lovely blue sky out there, even though it is seriously cold.

Anyways, to those of you, like me has just got back to work, hang in there, it’s not long till home time.

christmas.party.08

Last night’s Christmas party was great!

It was a fantastic night.

I had a good helping hand from SM. Although, I’m sure she was still aching all over from her dash in Chicago airport. I was thinking of all the little things she helped, which in fact when you think back about it made a big difference.

The girls were looking gorgeous. Someone commented today that he never seen so much legs from the girls in the office before! *smiles*

The men were dashing. Everyone did their part to wear some tartan. I loved Debbie’s tartan ribbon in her hair and that heather tartan corsage was beautiful. Until now, I’m so glad that my pal Suzanne decided to dress in her gold frock instead of a typical black dress cos she was afraid her bump would make her look like a house. But she didn’t. And she looked stunning!

The ceilidh band turned out better than expected. I had a few dance during the first set and didn’t dance again until the last dance of the night. I was busy catching up with folks I haven’t seen for ages! And it was good to just chat with some of the old friends.

We later headed off to One Up for drinks. By 130am I just had enough and headed home to wonderful smelling cookies, and bed.

Some of the pics from last night were out. The decent ones. The dodgy ones (so they say) will be out soon.

Interestingly, there was lots of gossip to catch up on today as well. The accidents that happened - the top guy of the area fell and broke his wrist, he was a really happy man last night 'tho; the scandalous gossips that get tongues a wagging.

Oh, the power of alcohol.

At least this year, I didn't have a massive hang over and sore throat of my own doing that lasted me the whole holiday season!

So I guess this marks the start of the holiday season. I better stock up my alcohol (not that I really need to), and other festive goodies.

After all, this is the season of indulgence and gluttony!

home

It's great to be home!

The air was cool and crisp at 2 degree celsius. Just how I like it.

And it was a beautiful sunshiny day. Perfect!

Was rushing off the plane (thank God there was an exit at the back of the plane) as quick as I could to the immigration as I wanted to meet up with mom and SA before they fly off to London.

I was greeted with empty immigration desks for other (non-British/EU) passports.

However, I had someone who was probably on his first day.

*smacks forehead*

And as his mentor / buddy is guiding him on processing my entry clearance, the image that repeatedly played in me head is me banging my head onto the desk continuously.

After quite some time the process was completed.

Still... it is just great to be home!

Mom and SA has rearranged and decorated my flat - I needed some time to sink in. Don't get me wrong, it is nice. Just different.

And missing them all. Felt really sad that I didn't get to spend the past week with them.

Anyways, it won't be long until they are back. And then us all including SM will be together for Christmas. How good!

In the meantime, I will first look forward to TOH's arrival on Friday. This is the longest time we've ever been apart!!!

a.day.of.a.tai.tai.

It's the end of another week of waiting. And sadly still no news.

The workaholic in me just can't register with all this idling time.

Luckily the unofficial ChakTai had a day out with the unofficial ShawTai.

We went to Ikea at Ikano for one of our favourite activities.

However, there is something about Ikea that is just not the same as the Ikea I used to know... it just lacklustre.

The food wasn't as great as we used to remember and the place... Let's just say it was a big disappointment.

To us, as sad as it sounds, Ikea was almost like home. (Yes, it does sound really sad). But now, it is just... *sigh*

On a happier note, we celebrated Ron's sixth birthday yesterday. That little chap was spoiled rotten with the numerous gifts we gave him. So bad... we shouldn't be spoiling him really.

In between shopping and birthday celebration, SA and I both still managed to squeeze in some Sims time. I will blog about Sims in another post.

In the meantime, I'll just have to find out more things to do to fill my time.

let's.go.to.the.zoo

It started out as a belated birthday celebration.

My treat to TOH to Edinburgh Zoo... So much for trying to wake up early, at least, by the time we arrived at the zoo it was only 1210pm - we left Glasgow at 11am.

It was a lovely day (by Scottish standard). Actually, it was a beautiful October day. We were prepared for the day, so a little shower now and then wasn’t that bad. At least when the sun was out, we did felt the heat.

Edinburgh Zoo was worth every penny we paid, and we even got £1 off each! - that was a bonus. The zoo is located on a hill so there was quite a bit of walking but it wasn’t as bad as we thought it would be. The zoo bus to the top of the hill wasn’t on a regular schedule the day we visited it.

The only part that was really difficult was the last leg of the hill to the hill top for the views. Other than that, it was a good walk on a lovely day.

The interesting thing that we noticed is that most animals are in pairs. It was almost like Noah’s zoo!

My fav couple pic.

Their tails were entwined together. So lovingly.

So is this couple of one horn rhinos.

Okay, so they are not ‘entwined’ but just lovingly cuddling together.

Our fav cat.

The Pallas Cat. So cuuuute!

The newly opened Budongo Trail was amazing.

This chimpanzee enclosure is equipped with all the tools suitable for education enhancement and is kids friendly too!

This is Cindy, she is 44 years old. That is quite old, I think - considering chimps live up to about fifty plus years old in the wild and sixty plus years old in captive.

The zoo has an incredible collection of animals - 160 species.

The highlight of the day was seeing the Penguin Parade!

Everyday, the penguins come out for a stroll around this particular path or circuit. And they do it on their own accord! Apparently, the amount of penguins out for walkies is uncertain, just depend on how many feel like a stroll.

Contrary to what it is like keeping penguins in Asia, the penguins here just sit out in the open. I wonder if the water is in a colder temperature or not. So is the polar bear, it just sits outdoor and not in an air conditioned enclosure.

Edinburgh Zoo is definitely worth a visit. It is also very accessible. And it doesn’t smell like Zoo Negara.

Depending on how you see it, some animals will be in the indoor enclosure keeping warm instead of roaming about in the open. Only down side is that some animals will be hiding or hibernating with the onset of winter. I can’t remember which animal, but one of it has been hibernating since September!

I think the enclosures were cleverly designed as well - like having passages where animals can travel between enclosures, almost like a Habitrail.

I’ll upload more pics on Facebook.

And as I said earlier, my birthday present to TOH, which somehow turned out to be our 14th month anniversary celebration. Unknowingly.

Actually we both enjoyed ourselves so much that we forgotten it was the 18th. At least, it was a fantastic day out!

zonked

I’m so shattered.

The accumulated lack of sleep and endless thoughts playing in me heid is taking its toll.

What a week it has been and a good consolation is having people around to talk to about. Amazing how helpful it can be.

Interestingly, I don’t really know how to put in on paper or on blog but I need to get it out of the system, else, I know it will drain me. Have to find a way to express it.

Last night, was out with the guys again. Didn’t blog about our previous outing but we went to the Italian Café at the Merchant City again last month. I do like the Italian Café and then we headed off to Scotia for live music.

Yesterday, we went to Ad Lib, located in the Merchant City as well.

I had a quick browse of the website yesterday and the food sounds great. Was very happy that there is an American food restaurant which is not your usual chain, thought I had a glimmer of hope for alternatives.

Alas! The food was only OK. ONLY, because the menu featured really appetising food but the taste was so so. The gang wasn’t impressed and it was a pity, poor Iain who arranged it had a bit bad feedback.

We then headed off to Scotia again to listen to the live band and shared banters.

This outing was kinda a leaving do for Rob and Tibault. They will both be missed.

This week I had missed quite a lot of Big Brother action.

But Daryl, Mo and Bex are up for eviction. I think Daryl will go tonight.

Anyways, I liked this week's 'Test of Time' task. Roomful of so many different clocks! How interesting!!!

As I said, I’m so tired. Am looking forward to getting on the bus and zonk out.

raging

Been on a wild goose chase earlier during lunchtime trying to bank in some money into HSBC.

Was raging trying to find the bank.

I admit it was my own fault that I didn’t have a good check of the place before I went, poor planning, and Google Maps on the mobile didn’t gave me the right info either.

The mobile internet provided wrong/un-updated info. Only saving grace was that I managed to call the branch and not their International Call Centre in Malaysia!

I supposed it is no fault of HSBC but I think enough is enough.

I’ve managed to avoid any increase in blood pressure banking with them. But for ‘The World’s Local Bank’ they are not the most convenience so to say.

I’m thankful that there has been at least one branch in every city. And I’m glad that their internet banking is sufficiently reasonable.

But beyond that, it is a hassle trying to find a branch and do a face to face banking.

I suppose in this day and age of internet banking, you can do everything online: setting up direct debit/standing order, payment, transfer, loans, etc etc.

If you want to know want to speak to someone, you have to call their call centre. That, would be another rant altogether.

Other than that, trying to bank in cash or cheque would be a hassle locating a branch.

Besides the brand, I don’t see any point of me staying them anymore.

I’ve been proud of the brand in the past as HSBC exudes prestige. I WAS proud to have been associated with the brand and was silly to be happy when I managed to open an Advantage account with them in KL and then an International Student account with them in the UK.

Other than that, not like they have the best rates around, because they don’t.

My initial plans of opening a HSBC account was I thought that it would make inter-bank transfer easier, believing that you can link up all your account worldwide and just do an internet transfer. But I was wrong.

Not only you can’t link them up whatsoever, bank transfer is more expensive than others available.

As one part of The Big Five (banks), they are reputable to have the highest charges and least consumer trust as well, or perhaps maybe not HSBC.

Banking is about what the bank can give you. And so far it seems only me that has been giving them my money to invest. I honestly can't see what's the point of me continuing banking with them.

But the time has come and enough is enough. I’m not going to give them anymore of my business/money. Not here not anywhere. I’m going to close my accounts and move on.

I’m fed up banking with HSBC.

RUDENESS

Emailed the PIC (person in charge) yesterday regarding an upcoming event.

ennazus: Hi, can you please put so-and-so and myself down for this-particular-event on this-particular-date, please?
PIC (in her close to exact words): Who told you about the particular-event on the-particular-date, as this hasn’t been confirmed yet, when all the details are sorted and we advertised this, can you please send me your name again please.
ennazus: OK, just saw them on the intranet that’s all.

Honestly, I should have attached the flyer to her. Still, 'who told you...?', when it was already posted on the intranet.

Whoever had put it on the intranet, I wonder was it intended for people to read and take action?

How can the respective PICs not know about it?

*sigh*

DREAMS

Never ever lie back down and start dreaming...

It is good.

Only thing is that more often than not you will over sleep.

Too bad you were not there with me...

DREAD

Late to work early to leave. What a life some people have.

Not looking forward to two events this evening.

Dentist. Driving lessons.

I believe I have two or is it three fillings on my left to do today(?).

Imagine numbed on the left side of my face. I think it would be from the jaw line up to just below my eye socket. Eeeww... just thinking about it sends a weird shiver down my spine.

I love driving and I think I’m a relatively good driver but my first lesson didn’t leave me with a good taste in my mouth.

It won’t be that bad tonight. I can only but hope.

At least I’m looking forward to hanging out with TS for one of our ‘overanalysing’ sessions.

dental.mental

I never practice the ‘every six month visit to the dentist’ because I don’t like the dentist.

I hate the dentist. I’m afraid of the drill.

Perhaps it was the numerous fillings I had at a young age. So much metal in my mouth that once Suemae said that ‘it might trigger the metal detector’. Still, I do not take heed of that advice.

Then, there was that RM400 smile. I think it was for polishing and scaling. Mom moaned a lot after that because I spent so much on one trip. And I had that tag above my head. I think I saved the receipt, somewhere in my past.

When I was in primary school, you get a yearly check up by the dental nurse. Oh how I dread those time. I feel as if they were out to get me. There seems to be something or some work to be carried out. Oh yes, I’m convinced that they gave me fillings just for the thrill of it.

*****

To cut the long story short, I finally registered and made an appointment with a dental practice who does NHS and private treatments.

My first visit was about two weeks ago. I had a quick dental check and x-rays for my molars just to check if they are decaying inside. Mr. Dentist (not Dr. as it was shown on my treatment sheet) advised that I needed fillings done to the front of my teeth, two fillings.

Other than that my teeth looked well overall, very pleased with myself. The toothache that I had a while back was just my wisdom tooth growing through the gum (but he said it with some bombastic words that I had to clarify with him after that just to make sure we were on same wavelength).

An appointment was made to see the Dental Hygienist, fillings and to discuss the result of the x-rays.

*****

Today was my second trip to the dentist.

First I went to see Ms. Hygienist. She was a very nice and kind lady. Even advised and showed me how to brush my teeth properly. She carried out scaling and polishing and prepped my teeth for Mr. Dentist.

TOH later said for the amount of money I’m paying, of course she was nice. More on that later.

Anyways, the appointment with Ms. Hygienist was quite interesting because you get to wear a bib and protective glasses. Hmmm...

As much as I kinda enjoyed the experience, I was dreading the drill for the fillings.

Once my teeth have been polished and scaled, I went on to the next consultation room to see Mr. Dentist.

*****

Compared to the earlier more relaxed room, Ms. Dental Assistant was not helping the atmosphere by making lots of banging and slamming sound in the room.

This time I wore a pair of ‘sunglasses’ and a bib. Honestly, don't remember wearing a bib in my past dental expriences. So professional. So impressed. So dreading.

Mr. Dentist showed me my x-ray and said that I will need work done in four of my molars.

Great just great. -__-

Today two in the front and another two more appointments for the rest.

That means more drill. That means more pain.

*Sigh*

And that means more money out of my pocket.

More sighs.

Anyways, Mr. Dentist said that he will be proceeding with injecting anaesthetic onto my gums to numb the area before the fillings on the two front teeth.

Anaesthetic?! O.o?!

The only time I get an anaesthetic was if I getting my tooth extracted.

I said I’ll give it a try. After all, I’m paying for it.

After I had the anaesthetic injected to my gums, the right front part of my face started becoming numb, all the way up my nose! OMG, it was such a weird sensation.

Once ready, Ms. Dental Assistant made herself useful. She had this wee vacuum in my mouth to vacuum as Mr. Dentist works.

Very interesting.

Don’t remember having a fancy vacuum in any of my dental visits before. This vacuum is different from the typical one because in the old fashion way, you prolly have this hook-on vacuum, not a very nice sight, but you still have to get up to rinse and spit, very often. Now, that action has been minimised.

*****

Speaking about sit up to rinse and spit, I find it rather interesting that when I get up to rinse/spit, Ms. Hygienist/Mr. Dentist will straighten up the seat and then lower it again. Every time!

Service? Hmmm...?

*****

Then the dreadful thing commenced, the drilling. It wasn’t that bad I guess. I was too busy squirming from the drilling sound and more busy wondering if my face looked weird from the anaesthetic.

Oh, before Mr. Dentist started his work, we had a chat about the works on the molars. He did provided a couple of options to me, NHS provides metal fillings for about £12-£15 each or the private white fillings for about £50 each.

I said I’m not that fuss. But actually I was thinking, ‘goodness more money!’

So halfway through the cleaning and drilling I had to stop Mr. Dentist.
ennazus: See the metal and white filling you were talking about earlier...
Mr. Dentist: Yes.
ennazus: That’s not for today right? That’s for the molars isn’t it? And you will be giving me white fillings for my front teeth today, right?
Mr. Dentist: Yup.
ennazus: Just to make sure that I’m not the crazy one who say ‘whatever fillings to my front teeth’.

Honestly. I kinda freaked out there.

*****

Before I realised it, the two very small fillings had been done and Ms. Dental Assistant was pointing this blue light at my teeth, which I presumed it was some UV light. Which I presumed it was used to speed up the drying and setting of the filling.

Which again, I find it all interesting.

Why?

Painless work and no metal feeling and no you-have-to-wait-for-donno-how-long-before-you-can-use-that-part-of-your-teeth advice. I would have liked the dentist then.

Anyways, the UV light story...

It is at this time you look up to see Mr. Dentist and Ms. Dental Assistant look away while waiting for the beeping sound (of the UV wand) to prolly indicate that the right dose or time has passed. I guess that’s why the ‘sunglasses’ was provided.

See, one thing I really can’t stand is that they don’t explain everything.

Like what the ‘sunglasses’ was for. Or like it is not that harmful. Or that the ‘sunglasses’ will protect my eyes. Or that I don't have to wonder or even worry.

Just like the earlier visit when I had the x-ray. I was asked to open wide, Mr. Dentist put in the x-ray film into the back of my left mouth, asked me to chew on it, aim the x-ray machine at the spot, and then walk out of the room, close the door, open the door and then come in again to do the same to the right side.

Now, what was that all about? No explanation nothing. Such a weird experience. I don’t even know what to do. So I closed my already damaged eyes. I don’t need it to be damaged further, not that I’m not doing enough on it already.

The next thing I know, it was all done. I wanted to ask Mr. Dentist something but forgotten because I was too engrossed thinking about my next pain or painless session and the hole in my pocket that seem to be getting bigger with every visit.

He advised that the numbness will go away in two hours time.

I wonder how weird I’m looking. Up until now I haven't been showed a mirror. I guess it’s different when you were a kid, the dentist will let you hold a mirror to see the work being carried out. Perhaps it was one of those ‘how things work’ experience.

Anyways, how could one forget about the money?

When I first made the appointment to register and go for my initial check up, I had to provide a £10 deposit over the phone. Fine.

I thought maybe it’s their way of making sure you don’t miss your appointment.

After the first visit, I was told to pay £4 plus for my x-rays.

Hang on a second. The reason I went for NHS so that I don’t have to pay or pay minimum.

Then I was told that the estimates for the treatment is £53 plus. What?!

And I had to pay another £10 deposit plus that £4 plus. What?! again.

£4 was the outstanding charge for the day's treatment and the £53 was the whole course of treatment. Apparently, this includes the two x-rays, fillings for my two front teeth, and hygienist appointment and check up.

The only thing that was free or covered totally by the NHS was the check up.

Great. £53 already in one visit.

Fifty odd quid for treatment I haven’t done in years, it’s not too bad I justified to myself.

And that £20 deposit will go towards my next appointment. Very clever man, these people. I also thought it was a good idea so that I won’t have to pay lump sum as I’ve already put in some money towards it.

*****

But then today, the bill has come up to £107 plus!

Whaaaa..??

Apparently this includes the four fillings to the molars, in my next couple of appointments.

-__-"

*Sigh*

Paid for the day's treatment and still have another £30 plus to pay when I come in next time. I just hope they won’t find anymore reasons to work on my teeth.

Times are really changing.

Obviously there has been technological advancement.

Obviously it has been ages since my last dental visit.

Obviously we are getting older.

In the UK, I believe they are moving away from mercury fillings because of the apparent danger and more importantly it is un-environmental friendly for disposal. You know those ‘un-green’ or ‘unsustainable’ buzz words.

*****

Gone were the days that Dentist Lee had to put the filling capsule into this machine with dials to have the mercury filling capsules ‘mixed’ about (I think). And then he will put the mixture on this 'plate' and use a syringe like thing to inject the fillings.

Gone were the going up the dark-ish stairs to ring the bell or rap on the dental practice's grille as it prolly wasn’t the safest area around. Or even walking to the back of the dental practice in the dark to the toilets.

Gone were the times that we will walk about Dentist Lee’s consultation room while one of us sisters or our parents had their dental treatment.

And as much as I hated going to the dentist, Dentist Lee’s place was this very minimal decorated place. Just concrete floor, some old dental posters - one of them will at least have an animation of a tooth or Captain toothpaste or something along that line, some boring 1970s/80s sofa, and that coffee table/rack filled with magazines, on the front page woman with big hair and bright make up.

Those were the days when we will go open the drawers of Dentist Lee’s patients’ records, not that we know what it was all about. To us, it was just the kaleidoscope of colours on those manila cards that held our attention. Or rather the action of opening and closing the drawers. Very mindless. Or just sitting in the reception swivel chair.

We were kids anyways. We were easily entertained. We were bored.

*****

And every time after the dental appointment we will go to the bakery next door, Twinkles, to buy cakes, to smell the freshly baked cakes and breads.

That, is the highlight of the trip.

That, is the only thing that made going to see Dentist Lee a bit more bearable.

That, I’m sure wasn’t the best of ideas. Cake = sugar.

But I’m sure my parents knew it would please us.

And so we look forward to the next trip. Sort of.

As for now, I just had a look at my newly polished and scaled pearlies. Man, do they look good!

So shiny! So happy!

Too bad I forgotten to take a pic of my before and after procedure. I think it wasn’t that obvious anyway, or maybe not.

I didn't want to eat anything or drink anything to stain it, to take away its shine, to damage this so called perfection.

Looking forward to that weird numbness sensation in two weeks time? I really wonder...
